The Candelaria

Maloka (Science + Interactive Technology)

At Maloka, where there is a blend of knowledge, technology, and amusement, it is forbidden not touch.

Maloka is a third generation museum. It has 17.000 sq.m. Of construction, 10.000 of them almost 30 feet below ground. Maloka is a probably the most important center of its kind in Latin America; 95% of the design and construction is local.


The first stage contains over 200 exhibitions in 9 halls. The themes are the universe, life, biodiversity in the Bogotá area, man, electricity and electromagnetism, technology, molecules in movement, the city, and children. Tours are accompanied by a guide; rooms can be booked for lectures and seminars. The complex has a central plaza, a shop, and a restaurant, and Internet Cafe and a Movie-Dome.

The Movie-Dome holds 314 seats and has a 135 degree spherical screen, with 58 million micro perforations, wish provide excellent resolution and realism.
Projections are in 70mm format -twice the commercial size. The Salitre Plaza shopping center, the most important in eastern Bogotá, is only a short distance away..

MONSERRATE

Bogotá’s favorite hill, with is a church which is a pilgrimage center, a couple of restaurants, and places to buy a handicrafts. The top can be reached either by cable car or funicular. It is best to go up a weekday, or at night to have dinner it a very romantic setting and the food is good in San Isidro- since at these times it is less crowded. The area around the funicular and cable car station in dangerous: avoid going there on foot.

ZIPAQUIRA
The Salt Mines of Zipaquirá, one and half hours from Bogotá. The town is famous for its Salt Cathedral.

LA CALERA BY NIGHT
A favorite night-time excursion, especially on Fridays, is to go up La Calera road to the various discotheques and restaurants, some fifteen minutes from
the city. Magnificent view over northern Bogotá.
