Villavicencio
is the capital of the Department of Meta, and is known as the
Door to the Plains. It is the commercial and cattle-raising center
of the East. It was founded in 1840 around a settlement called
Gramalote, which housed cowboys that took cattle from several
places in the plains to the market in Bogota. In the Eastern Cordillera
area there are beautiful haciendas and large ranches such as Cravo
Sur, specialized in raising buffalo.
In
and around Villavicencio (in a diameter of approximately 130 km)
several tours are available where those of the greatest interest
are to see farming activities, settlements, Indigenous reserves,
lakes, natural resorts and beautiful fields with all types of
cattle.
